Email Marketing - Using Email To Build An Opt-In Mailing List

One of the most powerful uses of “email” marketing is using email to build an opt-in mailing list.

An opt-in mailing list is a database of names and email addresses from people that have subscribed to an email list via a web form giving that list owner permission to send them periodic emails on the topic they are interested in. This is known as is known as Permission Email Marketing. The advantage of using opt-in lists and Permission Email Marketing is that you, the email marketer can communicate with a large number of people who are particularly interested in your product, service or organization.

Building opt-in mailing lists is an area that is growing in popularity with email marketers. However, like all forms of marketing and advertising, it is worth noting that there are some do’s and don’ts in starting your opt-in mailing list.

Here are some of the most important tips worth mentioning:

DO’S

1. Put a subscription form prominently on your website. You can create your own subscription form using software that allows you to create subscription form (better still, use an autoresponder service like Aweber).
2. Let people know that they can subscribe to your email list in your email signatures. This will allow them to link straight through to the subscription form on your website from your email message.
3. Ask people permission if they do want to be subscribed on your mailing list. Avoid doing anything that can get your emails labelled as SPAM (unsolicited emails).
4. Use your imagination and creativity to think of new ways to attract subscribers, especially whenever you interact with potential customers. For example, add a subscription address to your business cards.
5. Be clear on how people will benefit from subscribing to your opt-in list, and know especially how often you plan to contact them. Let them know exactly what they will be receiving when they subscribe.
6. Aim to contact you new subscribers as soon as you can (again, this is where an autoresponder service like Aweber comes in handy). Welcome them and tell them what to expect as a member of your opt-in list.

DON’TS

1. Don't add everyone who has ever emailed you to your list. Remember to always ask permission first.
2. Don't purchase lists if you are not 100% sure that people have actually opted-in to it. Always have some form of evidence to prove that your opt-in list is genuine and legitimate.
3. Don't abuse people’s trust. This is a sure way to ruin your business, your brand and your personal reputation. Abusing people's trust is a sure way to get them to ignore your email messages, cancel their subscription and even report you as a spammer.

Click here if you're looking for a powerful and affordable opt-in list building application that is easy to install and allows you to collect a prospect's contact details (e.g. their name and email address) before giving them more information. This software also allows you to personalize your sales page with your prospect's name (this has been proven to increase sales conversion rates!), automatically subscribes prospects to your email lists and sends prospects to diferent sales pages based on their interests.
